Did you know that not all Netflix libraries are created equal? It’s true. Let’s say, for example, you’re an American expat living in Rome, the Netflix library you’ll have access to in Italy will be entirely different from the one you’re used to seeing back home in the States. But you signed up for Netflix in the US, you have an American Netflix account, so wouldn’t that mean you’ll see the US Netflix library wherever you travel? Nope. It doesn’t work like that. Netflix is only licensed to make certain titles available to viewers in certain geographic regions, so it doesn’t matter where in the world you signed up, the Netflix library available to you will be the one associated with the country you’re presently in.
But if you have the right VPN, you can unblock Netflix US and unblock Netflix libraries from other countries as well, no matter where you’re actually located. So, in other words, you can use a VPN to effectively maximize your Netflix viewing potential. Not every title available in the US will be available in Italy, and not every title available in Italy will be available in Germany, Japan, France, Canada… you get the idea. The point I’m trying to make here is that you can virtually hop from country to country with your VPN and unlock a whole world of Netflix, and access all kinds of movies and shows available around the world that you wouldn’t normally be able to access on the streaming platform if you didn’t have a VPN in your hip pocket. And the best part is that it matters not where you are.
One major thing you’ll need to keep in mind, however, is that most VPNs won’t be able to unblock any regional Netflix library because Netflix has actively made it difficult for its customers to use VPNs to bypass geo-restrictions. Most VPNs have given up developing workarounds for the Netflix VPN block and simply don’t work anymore to unblock any Netflix library. And of the VPNs that do successfully unblock Netflix, many of them will only unblock the US library. That may be totally fine with you if the US library is the only one you’re interested in unblocking. I mean, after all, the US Netflix library is the holy grail of all Netflix libraries.
But why not go with a VPN that can unblock Netflix US and other countries’ libraries as well? Why not maximize what you can get out of your Netflix subscription and access more than just the US library? Well, I want to clue you in on the VPNs that can help you do just that.
I’ve compiled a list of the VPNs that can unblock the most Netflix libraries worldwide and I’d like to share that list with you here so you can derive the maximum potential from your Netflix subscription and access as much content on the platform as humanly possible.
Surfshark (26 Netflix libraries)
Surfshark takes the proverbial cake here as numero uno on my list thanks to it being able to offer access to a staggering 26 different countries’ Netflix libraries. These include Netflix US, UK, Canada, France, India, Norway, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Australia, South Korea, Turkey, Singapore, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Spain, Taiwan, Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Belgium, Portugal, Israel, Thailand, and Chile. And I’m sure you’ll be happy to know that the fine folks over at Surfshark have no intentions of stopping at 26 – they tell me that they’re working on providing access to more libraries all the time.
If you really want to get the absolute most out of your Netflix subscription, you need not look any further than Surfshark. You’d be hard-pressed to find a VPN provider more dedicated to giving users extensive access to Netflix libraries from around the world. What’s great about Surfshark is that it’s one of the most affordable VPN services on the market – and it also happens to be one of the very best all-around.
ExpressVPN (20+ Netflix libraries)
ExpressVPN is another one of the best VPNs for unblocking Netflix libraries from around the world, with reliable unblocking capabilities for more than 20 countries’ Netflix libraries. Though ExpressVPN doesn’t have any official documentation on its website that dives into any specifics as far as which countries’ Netflix libraries the service can unblock, in our testing at ProPrivacy, we’ve identified up to 24 available libraries. Since the situation is highly fluid, however, this number is subject to change at any time, according to customer service representatives (this is probably why there is no official documentation on the website).
Nonetheless, you can contact customer service over at ExpressVPN at any time, day or night on live chat and inquire about the availability of any particular country’s library you’re interested in accessing. I routinely use ExpressVPN for all kinds of things, including unblocking Netflix, and I’ve personally been able to unblock Netflix US, UK, Germany, Japan, and France. Give it a shot yourself and see which libraries you’re able to unblock with ExpressVPN – you can do so without risking your cash thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee.
PrivateVPN (19 Netflix libraries)
With PrivateVPN, you’ll be able to unblock 19 different countries’ Netflix libraries, bringing it in just behind ExpressVPN on my list. In addition to being able to unblock Netflix US, you’ll be able to access Netflix Canada, UK, France, Japan, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Columbia, Argentina, and South Korea. That’s quite a decent spread, and you can get all that access for about two bucks a month if you spring for the 24-month plan.
NordVPN (16 Netflix libraries)
NordVPN, the world-class VPN provider from Panama, is no slouch here either, and will give you access to 16 different Netflix libraries – definitely a respectable selection. Those libraries include Netflix US, Canada, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, Netherlands, Spain, India, Brazil, South Korea, Finland, Poland, and Turkey.
CyberGhost VPN (5 Netflix libraries)
While CyberGhost VPN won’t be able to give you the breadth of Netflix access that the others on my list are capable of, I included it because it’s a stellar VPN provider in general and you’ll still be able to unblock Netflix US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan. Those five Netflix libraries are some of the most sought-after and extensive in the world, so you’ll be able to access tons of awesome content with CyberGhost. If you’re not particularly into being spoiled for Netflix choice and are looking for a secure and easy-to-use VPN with slick applications for your phone and laptop, then CyberGhost could be the VPN for you.
VyprVPN (4 Netflix libraries)
Similarly, VyprVPN provides access to only a handful of Netflix libraries (US, UK, Canada, and Germany), but I’ve included it because it’s a top-notch provider that’s totally affordable and offers excellent speeds and security. VyprVPN cuts out the middle-man completely because it fully owns and operates its entire network of servers around the world – this allows the provider to offer you the speeds to stream Netflix smoothly from anywhere and the security to keep you safe online while doing so.
Considering the lengths Netflix goes to ban VPN use on its platform, unblocking even a single Netflix library is no small feat for any VPN provider. But when you have a VPN that can unblock more than a dozen (or 26!) Netflix libraries, then you know you’ve got something special.
Being an expat myself, I know how important it can be to unwind and enjoy some downtime with Netflix every so often in this hectic and often unpredictable world. So why not make the most of it and stretch your Netflix subscription as far as it can possibly go? You may be amazed at how vastly Netflix libraries from different countries vary from one another. With the right VPN, you can see for yourself – you can broaden your horizons by exploring Netflix content from all over the globe, and you can seriously upgrade your expat experience altogether.
